Chronograph Watches
A chronograph is, technically speaking, a stopwatch on your wrist. Most wearers never use this function and buy the watch anyway. Not out of naivety, but because a chronograph delivers something no functional argument can explain: it looks like more. Three subdials, two pushers, a dial with depth. That's not a contradiction, that's the actual job of this watch category.
Swiss Military by Chrono builds men's chronograph watches and women's chronographs that take this standard seriously: Swiss movement, sapphire crystal, stainless steel case. Those who understand that make better purchases and know what matters.

4 facts behind every watch we build.
Chronograph Wristwatch FAQ: What Buyers Want to Know
1. What is a chronograph watch?
A chronograph watch is a timepiece with a built-in stopwatch function. Two pushers on the side of the case start, stop and reset a central seconds hand, while three smaller dials, called subdials or registers, track elapsed minutes, hours and continuous seconds. Swiss Military by Chrono chronographs run on a certified Swiss quartz movement: accurate, low-maintenance and built for everyday wear.
2. What is the difference between a chronograph and a normal watch?
A standard watch shows the time: Hours, minutes, seconds. A chronograph does the same, but adds a stopwatch function operated by two pushers. The result is a more complex dial with three subdials, which gives the watch its distinctive technical look. If you want a watch that does more and looks like it, a chronograph wristwatch is the right choice.
3. What is the purpose of a chronograph watch?
Originally designed for pilots, sailors and racing drivers to measure elapsed time precisely, the chronograph today serves a different purpose for most wearers: it signals competence and presence on the wrist. Most owners rarely use the stopwatch function and that's fine. A chronograph earns its place through what it looks like, not just what it does.
4. Do I really need the stopwatch function?
Honestly, most chronograph wearers rarely use it. A chronograph wins on the wrist through what it looks like: the technical dial, the pushers, the depth. Three subdials and two pushers communicate precision and purpose, even when the stopwatch hasn't been touched in months. If you want a watch that looks like it means business, the stopwatch function is a bonus, not the reason to buy.
5. Are chronograph watches worth it?
Yes, if you buy the right one. Swiss Military by Chrono chronographs are officially licensed by the Swiss Confederation, assembled in Solothurn, and backed by a 5-year international warranty. That's what worth it looks like.
6. What are the 3 dials on a chronograph watch for?
The three subdials on a chronograph each measure something different: one tracks elapsed seconds continuously, one counts elapsed minutes when the stopwatch is running, and one shows elapsed hours. Together they let you measure time intervals precisely: From a few seconds to several hours. When the stopwatch isn't in use, the subdials simply display the running seconds and act as part of the watch's visual identity.
7. What does "Swiss Made" actually mean?
"Swiss Made" is not a marketing term, it's a legally protected label governed by the Swiss Federal Act on the Protection of Trade Marks. It sets strict requirements for the movement, manufacturing process and quality control. Not every watch with a Swiss-sounding name qualifies. Swiss Military by Chrono is officially licensed by the Swiss Confederation and assembles its watches in Solothurn, Switzerland. That's the difference between a label and a guarantee.
8. Is a chronograph watch a good gift?
Yes, one of the best, if you get two things right: case size and personal style. A chronograph is visually present and feels like a considered choice, not a generic gift. If you're unsure, stick to a mid-sized case (42–44 mm) and a versatile dial colour. Every Swiss Military by Chrono chronograph comes with a 5-year international warranty, so the quality is always perfect. Browse our collection gifts for everyone → for curated options by occasion.

Chronograph Buying Criteria
A chronograph is more than just looks. Those who know what matters buy a watch that lasts for years, not one that disappoints after two.
These criteria will help you recognize the difference.
1. Movement & Origin
The heart of a watch is its movement, and in a chronograph wristwatch, it doesn't just power the time display but also the stopwatch function. What matters is where the movement comes from: a certified Swiss movement is subject to strict quality standards and is not the same as an imported movement. Swiss Military by Chrono exclusively uses Swiss quartz movements from renowned Swiss manufacturers like ETA, Ronda, or Sellita. Accurate to \pm15 seconds per year, low-maintenance, and built to last.
2. Crystal Quality: Sapphire or Mineral
Sapphire crystal is the better choice for a watch worn daily. It reaches a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, while mineral glass only reaches 5. The difference becomes clearly visible after just a few months of everyday wear. Swiss Military by Chrono consistently uses sapphire crystal across all new and future models.
3. Case Size & Fit
The fit is what matters. A 46mm XL case quickly looks bulky on narrower wrists; cases that are too small lose the chronograph aesthetic. Rule of thumb: wrist circumference under 17 cm → 38–42 mm, 17 cm and above → 42–46 mm. If you're looking for a women's watch, you'll find a selection in our Ladies chronograph collection.
4. Material & Water Resistance
The case material determines how a watch holds up to everyday wear. Stainless steel is the proven standard: easy to maintain, durable, and resilient. PVD-coated variants in black, gold, or other colors add visual distinction. Water resistance, at least 5 ATM for daily wear, 10 ATM for sports, is a basic requirement across all materials for a watch that's actually worn.
5. Dial
The time must be readable at a glance, even with three subdials. Three counters can quickly become cluttered. Luminous hands, high-contrast indices, and a clear dial layout aren't a design question, they're a functional one.
6. Garantie & Service
A five-year international warranty is a concrete promise and a risk reduction that matters at the point of purchase. What's crucial is who stands behind it: at Swiss Military by Chrono, the warranty provider and the manufacturer are one and the same: us. In case of a warranty claim, there's a direct point of contact, no runaround. You'll find all warranty information here.
7. Value & Swiss Made
"Swiss Made" doesn't have to be unaffordable. We believe Swiss quality should be accessible to everyone. That's why we offer Swiss-made chronographs at fair prices, without compromising on materials or craftsmanship. "Swiss Made" isn't a marketing term - it's a legally protected label with strict requirements for movement, production, and quality control, regulated by Swiss trademark law (TmPA).
