Swiss Military Solar Power Watches: What "No Battery Change" Really Means

In brief:

Our Swiss Military solar watches recharge in light and require no regular battery changes during normal operation. Depending on the model, the stated power reserve when fully charged is up to five or eight months.

This makes them particularly low-maintenance, but not completely maintenance-free. The rechargeable energy cell can lose capacity over time and may eventually require servicing.

Our Solar Watches

Designed for Everyday Life

A solar watch shouldn't just be technically interesting—it should work reliably in everyday life. That's why we focus on combining sporty design, robust features, excellent legibility, and a power supply that recharges in light in our Swiss Military models.

We support our watches from assembly and quality control through to customer service, warranty, and servicing. The solar movement in our watches comes from Swiss movement manufacturer Ronda.

In this article, we explain how solar technology works in everyday life, what power reserve means, and when a solar watch may require servicing later.

How Does a Swiss Military Solar Powered Watch Charge in Light?

Beneath the dial sits a solar cell. It absorbs light and converts it into electrical energy. This energy is collected in a rechargeable energy cell and then used to power the movement.

Direct sunlight isn't always necessary. Artificial light can also charge the watch. However, direct sunlight is significantly more intense and therefore particularly effective when a watch needs energy after an extended period in darkness.

The dial serves two functions simultaneously: it should be legible and aesthetically refined—while allowing enough light through to the solar cell. In modern solar watches, the technology is integrated in a way that keeps it as unobtrusive as possible in everyday use.

How Long Does a Swiss Military Solar Watch Run in the Dark?

Power reserve describes how long a fully charged solar watch can continue running without additional light. It's a technical specification for each model—not a blanket guarantee for every usage scenario.

Actual runtime depends on factors including how fully the energy cell is charged, how frequently the watch receives light, and how long it remains in darkness. The specific movement and additional functions can also play a role.

A longer power reserve isn't automatically the better choice. If you wear your watch daily, chronograph function, dial, case size, or strap may be more important to you. If you regularly store a watch for extended periods, power reserve becomes more significant.

If you keep a solar watch in a drawer for several months, you should allow it sufficient light exposure before wearing it again.

What should you consider during extended storage of your Solar Power Watch?

If you plan not to wear your Swiss Military solar watch for an extended period, you should charge it sufficiently before storage. For the models designed for this, you can then activate energy-saving mode by pulling the crown to the outermost position. This reduces the energy consumption of the movement and conserves the stored energy.

Before wearing it again, push the crown back to the normal position and allow the watch to receive sufficient light again. You'll find the exact instructions for the crown and energy-saving mode in the documentation for your model.

Our solar watches also have overcharge protection. When the energy storage is fully charged, harmful overcharging is prevented. Energy-saving mode and overcharge protection have different functions: energy-saving mode reduces consumption during storage; overcharge protection protects the energy storage during charging.

Will a Swiss Military Solar Watch Need Servicing Later?

Yes, future servicing may be necessary. The reason isn't regular battery replacement, but the natural capacity loss of the rechargeable energy cell.

With a conventional quartz watch, battery replacement is part of recurring maintenance. With our solar watches, this regular step is eliminated through light charging. However, the energy cell remains a technical component whose capacity can diminish over time.

If your Swiss Military solar power watch loses energy noticeably faster than before or stops after only brief darkness, it should be inspected. This can determine whether the cause lies with light exposure, usage, or the energy cell itself.

We recommend contacting our customer service or a certified service center in such cases. You'll find the applicable warranty terms and designated service channels on our website:

A solar watch isn't "maintenance-free forever." Its specific advantage is that you don't need to schedule regular battery changes during normal operation.

Three Common Everyday Questions

My Solar Watch Has Stopped. Is It Broken?

Not necessarily. If a solar watch has been kept in darkness for an extended period, the energy cell may be largely depleted. Depending on the model and light source, the watch then needs time to absorb sufficient energy again.

First, expose the watch to bright light. Direct sunlight is particularly effective. Then check whether it's running again and correctly set. You'll find specific guidance for your model on the respective product page and in the documentation.

Can I Charge a Swiss Military Solar Watch in the Office?

Yes. Indoor light can also contribute to power supply. However, the charging speed is lower than with direct sunlight. If you wear your watch mainly in the office and under long sleeves, the dial may receive less light than outdoors.

Regular wear can support energy supply, provided the dial receives adequate illumination. For extended storage in darkness, you should recharge the watch sufficiently before wearing it again.

Do I Need to Charge a Solar Watch Daily?

No. Our solar watches recharge during wear in light and also have a power reserve.

The goal isn't a daily charging ritual, but rather an unobtrusive flow of energy in everyday life.

Which Swiss Military Solar Watch Is Right for You?

We sell exclusively our own brand directly through our online shop. So the selection isn't about comparing different suppliers, but rather: Which Swiss Military model suits your lifestyle and style?

We source our solar movements from Swiss movement manufacturer Ronda. In our in-house workshop, we assemble the Ronda solar movements into the respective Swiss Military models. Specifications for movement, power reserve, and features refer to the specific model and current product information.

FAQ

What You Can Expect from a Swiss Military Solar Watch

Our solar watches eliminate regular battery changes and require no daily charging on a charger. The SMS34102 offers up to eight months of power reserve when fully charged; the SMS34113 offers up to five months.

At the same time, a solar watch remains a technical product: it needs light, and the rechargeable energy cell can lose capacity over time. That's precisely why we describe it as low-maintenance, not completely maintenance-free.

How Do You Charge Your Swiss Military Solar Watch in Everyday Life?

Our solar watches charge with light. Direct sunlight is more intense than indoor lighting and can therefore charge the watch faster. Artificial light also contributes to the power supply, though more slowly.

If you store your watch in the dark for an extended period, expose it to sufficient light before wearing it again. You'll find specific charging information on the respective product page, in your model's manual, or in the section "How does a Swiss Military solar watch charge with light?"
